What’s the Difference Between N35 & N52 Magnets?
Ten times stronger than the strongest ceramic magnet, neodymium magnets are the most powerful commercially produced industrial magnet on the market. They are perfect for any project, large or small, and are widely used in products such as hard drives, mobile phones and battery-powered tools.
At US Magnetix, our neodymium magnets come in many shapes and sizes to fit your exact needs. Most of our neo magnets are grade N35 and nickel plated, but neodymium magnets are available in other grades as well.
The N Rating
The magnet grade, or N rating, is a way of indicating a magnet’s strength. It represents the magnet’s maximum energy product, and it is measured in Mega Gauss-Oersteds (MGOe). Neodymium magnet grades typically range from 33 to 55 MGOe. Generally, the higher the N rating the stronger the magnet is going to be. These grades can be helpful when determining what magnet is right for your application.
N35 vs N52
Two of the most common grades of Neodymium magnets are N35 and N52. N52 is the highest grade that is commonly available and mass-produced for commercial use and offers high strength in a compact size. N35, while not as strong, is still incredibly powerful and used in wide range of general-purpose applications. So how do you know which one is best for you? Let’s see how the two grades measure up.
Magnetic Strength
N52 magnets are generally going to have a stronger pull force than N35, so if your application requires maximum magnetic power, N52 might be the better choice.
Size
N52 magnets offer more power in a smaller, more compact size, making them the ideal choice if you are working with a very limited amount of space and need high magnetic force. However, you can accommodate a larger magnet, N35 will likely be a more cost-effective option.
Cost
N35 magnets are typically going to be less expensive because N52 magnets require a more precise manufacturing process and contain higher concentrations of neodymium.
Durability & Temperature
N35 magnets tend to be less prone to breakage under mechanical stress and are often better suited for higher temperature applications than N52 magnets, but there are coating options that can increase durability and heat sensitivity based on specific application needs.
Applications
N35 magnets are commonly used for consumer electronics, DIY projects, crafts, closures, sensors, fridge magnets, magnetic toys and educational kits. N52 magnets are often the preferred choice for applications that require a higher magnetic strength and a compact design, such as motors, speakers and certain medical devices.
